چکیده

Cubic diamond was synthesized with two systems, (1) graphite with pure magnesium carbonate (magnesite) and (2) graphite with mixed potassium and magnesium carbonate at pressures and temperatures above 9.5 GPa, 1600 ±C and 9 GPa, 1650 ±C, respectively. At these conditions (1) the pure magnesite is solid, whereas (2) the mixed carbonate exists as a melt. In this pressure range, graphite seems to be partially transformed into hexagonal diamond. Measured carbon isotope d13C values for all the materials suggest that the origin of the carbon source to form cubic diamond was the initial graphite powder, and not the carbonates.

Natural diamond formation by self-redox of ferromagnesian carbonate

Formation of natural diamonds requires the reduction of carbon to its bare elemental form, and pressures (P) greater than 5 GPa to cross the graphite-diamond transition boundary. In a study of shocked ferromagnesian carbonate at the Xiuyan impact crater, we found that the impact pressure-temperature (P-T) of 25-45 GPa and 800-900 °C were sufficient to decompose ankerite Ca(Fe2+,Mg)(CO3)2 to for...

Diamond Synthesis from Graphite in the Presence of Water and SiO2: Implications for Diamond Formation in Quartzites from Kazakhstan

Recent studies of microdiamonds from orogenic belts related to continental collisions induced experimentalists to explore new crystallization media possible for diamond synthesis. This has led to considerable progress in diamond-synthesis experiments under high pressures and high temperatures. Diamond was found to grow in a wide variety of systems, which drastically differ from the metal-solven...

Direct Laser Writing of Nanodiamond Films from Graphite under Ambient Conditions

Synthesis of diamond, a multi-functional material, has been a challenge due to very high activation energy for transforming graphite to diamond, and therefore, has been hindering it from being potentially exploited for novel applications. In this study, we explore a new approach, namely confined pulse laser deposition (CPLD), in which nanosecond laser ablation of graphite within a confinement l...

Phase transition in boron nitride by ion irradiation under high pressure

Boron nitride (BN) does not exist as a natural mineral, but can be synthesized in its hexagonal (hBN) and cubic form (cBN). Both phases are stable at ambient conditions and are used in a variety of applications, e.g. as lubricant (hBN) or abrasive (cBN). hBN has a similar layered structure as graphite, whereas cBN is the second-hardest material after diamond with a similar unit cell. There exis...
